History of Netball Australia

Netball Australia’s history traces back to its origins in 1927 with the formation of the All Australian Women’s Basketball Association, marking a significant milestone in the development of the sport in the country. Initially known as the All Australia Women’s Basketball Association, the organization evolved over the years to become the All Australia Netball Association in the 1970s. By the 1980s, it was officially incorporated as Netball Australia.

The national governing body saw Tasmania join in 1933, with the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory becoming members in 1975 and 1977, respectively. The game continued to grow, shedding the ‘women’ label from its name, emphasizing the sport’s inclusivity.

Netball Australia’s Council, composed of representatives from each state and territory, oversees the sport’s development. The Council elects a Board of Directors responsible for governance and operations, ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of netball in Australia.
